Clash of the Titans (1981)
“Clash of the Titans” is a 1981 fantasy adventure film directed by Desmond Davis and produced by Ray Harryhausen.
This movie was one of the last to feature the legendary stop-motion animation technique known as “Dynamation”, which Ray Harryhausen had mastered and made famous throughout his career.
The story is loosely based on the Greek myth of Perseus, son of Zeus.
Perseus must undertake a quest to save Princess Andromeda from being sacrificed to the sea monster, the Kraken.
Along the way, he encounters various mythical creatures, including Medusa, the Gorgon, whose gaze turns living beings into stone, and the winged horse Pegasus.
Hercules (1958)
“Hercules” follows the legendary Greek hero Hercules, who, upon his return to Thebes, falls in love with the beautiful Princess Iole.
To win her love, he must undertake a series of challenges, which showcases his immense strength and courage.
Alongside this main narrative, there are other intertwined stories from Hercules’ adventures and Greek mythology.
Jason and the Argonauts (1963)
“Jason and the Argonauts” is a 1963 British-American fantasy adventure film directed by Don Chaffey, produced by Charles H. Schneer, and with stop-motion animation effects by the legendary Ray Harryhausen.
The movie is loosely based on the ancient Greek myth of Jason and his quest for the Golden Fleece.
The story follows the young hero Jason, who, after being prophesied to take the throne of Thessaly, sets out on a perilous voyage with the crew of the Argo to retrieve the fabled Golden Fleece. Along the way, Jason and his crew, the Argonauts, encounter various mythical challenges and creatures.
It remains one of the most iconic films in the fantasy genre.
Troy (2004)
“Troy” is a 2004 epic historical war film directed by Wolfgang Petersen and written by David Benioff.
The film is loosely based on Homer’s ancient Greek poem, the “Iliad,” though it takes significant liberties with the source material for dramatic purposes.
The movie centers on the 10-year siege of the city of Troy by the Greeks, which was ignited by the elopement of Helen, the Queen of Sparta, with Paris, the Prince of Troy.
300 (2006)
“300” is a 2006 epic historical action film directed by Zack Snyder.
It is based on the 1998 comic series of the same name by Frank Miller and Lynn Varley.
The plot depicts the Battle of Thermopylae and the events leading up to it from a stylized, fictionalized perspective.
The film tells the story of King Leonidas of Sparta and his 300 warriors as they make a heroic stand against the massive Persian army led by King Xerxes at the narrow coastal pass of Thermopylae.
Though outnumbered, the Spartans use strategy, their superior training, and sheer will to hold off the Persians and inspire all of Greece to unite against the invader.
